Dear Resident,
The fire that destroyed so many businesses on Covert Avenue yesterday was
devastating for the business owners and for the business community on Covert
Avenue as a whole. Especially given the
size of the fire, we are most thankful that there was no loss of life and only 2-3
injuries to firefighters that are not life threatening (none from the Stewart
Manor Fire Department). There is no
official information as to the cause available at this time.
Floral Park Fire Department was the command on the scene, as that was the
location of the actual fire. Stewart
Manor Fire Department members worked tirelessly for hours alongside Floral Park
and many other neighboring fire departments to extinguish the blaze. We are grateful
for all of their efforts.
The effects of this fire are sure
to be felt far into the future. I will
be working very closely with the Mayor of Floral Park to facilitate the
re-building of those businesses that suffered damages. Please keep all of the business owners and
workers in your thoughts and prayers.
Also, please do what you can to support not only the businesses
devastated by fire, but all of the Covert Avenue businesses, who already had
been suffering due to the pandemic.
This is also a reminder
to be vigilant and conscientious as to the safety of our homes. As October is typically Fire Prevention
month, now may be a good time to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon
monoxide detectors, and to review your fire safety plans with your family.
Lastly, when you get a
chance please extend a thank you to any of our Fire Department volunteers for
the tremendous work they perform to keep our Village safe.
Mike Onorato
Mayor
