Dear Resident,
September 2, 2020 marks the 75th Commemoration
of the End of World War II. As
such, the Village will acknowledge that milestone at this year’s Memorial Day
Ceremony on Saturday, May 23rd.
To that end, the Village is asking if any resident who had an immediate
relative who was a veteran who died in service to our nation in WWII or any war,
would like to share something about their loved one for our ceremony. If that is the case, kindly send a paragraph
about your loved one in an email to the Village Hall at villagehall@stewartmanor.org. Please mark the subject line as “Memorial
Day”.
Also, we have been notified by the daughter of
former Stewart Manor resident and WWII Veteran, Tony Zahn, that she has
published a book of his letters home during WWII in honor of this same
anniversary. For information, you can
visit the website: TonysWar.com or consult the attached flyer.
Dr. Sherie Zahn wrote the following to the
Village:
Edward Anthony (Tony) Zahn lived
at 29 Salisbury Avenue from 1927 until 1948. He graduated from Sewanhaka High
School in 1938.
I have just published the letters
that he, my father, wrote home during WWII, from the day he left for Basic
Training in October of 1942, until his return home from the Philippines in
January, 1946. Stewart Manor is cited throughout the book, and I thought you
might be interested to know the role that this former resident played in
history.
TONY’S WAR is a book of 256
letters that Tony wrote home to his parents. Tony was a gifted writer, and the
letters are truly enthralling. The text is augmented by 52 of his drawings and
photographs.
2020 is the 75th
anniversary of the end of WWII, and my goal is to get this very unique offering
onto the NY Times Bestseller list. All profits from this undertaking will be
donated to Veterans’ organizations.
I am sending you this letter in
the hope that you will buy the book and find it worthy to spread the word and
promote it to your staff, to fellow residents of Stewart Manor, and any other
parties with an interest in the subject, thus sharing the historical
significance of the village and one of its own. The print book and ebook are
currently available online, and an audiobook will soon be available.
